In my third year of medical school I was thinking of becoming an obstetrician. Expectant mothers are the only ones who come to the hospital for a happy reason! Every one else comes because they are sick.
I thought that bringing new life into the world might be one of the most rewarding careers available in medicine.
My first night on call the intern told me that if I was prolife I "should pick a different specialty." She begrudging acknowledged that it was not required to perform abortions as a resident if you had moral objections to it but that it was strongly encouraged and residents who opted out were hazed.
I am now a second year general surgery resident.
